Do You Need a Farm Bureau Membership for Farm Bureau Insurance in Sandpoint?

Farm Bureau 6 min read By Marks Insurance Agency

Generally, yes: Idaho Farm Bureau Insurance says its products and services are available only to members of the Idaho Farm Bureau Federation and an affiliated county Farm Bureau. You do not have to farm to join. In Bonner County, Idaho Farm Bureau lists the county Farm Bureau office at 920 Kootenai Cutoff Rd. in Ponderay, the same address and phone number as Marks Insurance Agency.

That membership requirement surprises many people who are new to Sandpoint or who have only bought insurance from national companies. It is usually a small step, but it helps to understand what you are joining, what you are buying, and who you will work with afterward.

Membership and insurance are two different things

The Idaho Farm Bureau Federation is a membership organization with county Farm Bureaus across the state. Idaho Farm Bureau describes county Farm Bureaus as autonomous organizations with their own bylaws. Membership comes with benefits and programs that Idaho Farm Bureau groups into categories such as agriculture, auto, dining, entertainment, health, home and office, insurance, retail shopping, and travel. See the current list on the Idaho Farm Bureau member benefits page.

The insurance comes from a separate company. Idaho Farm Bureau Insurance traces its start to May 1, 1947, when a group of Idaho farmers and ranchers founded Idaho Farm Insurance Company, which began by selling auto insurance from a Pocatello office. That company later became Farm Bureau Mutual Insurance Company of Idaho and, in 2024, restructured as Farm Bureau Insurance Company of Idaho. The company describes itself as the largest writer of farm and ranch insurance in Idaho and the largest insurance company wholly based in Idaho. Read its own account on the Farm Bureau Insurance About Us page.

The link between the two is eligibility. The insurer's terms of use say its products and services are available only to members of the Idaho Farm Bureau Federation and an affiliated county Farm Bureau. So the usual order is simple: become a member, then buy the coverage that fits.

You do not have to farm to join

The name leads many Sandpoint residents to assume Farm Bureau is only for farmers and ranchers. It is not. Idaho Farm Bureau's membership application offers a regular membership for people actively involved in production agriculture and an associate membership for others. The application states that regular, associate, and business memberships are the same price.

Dues are paid each year, and the current amount is shown on Idaho Farm Bureau's membership application when you join or renew. Add it to your premiums when you compare the full cost of coverage.

  • A homeowner in Sandpoint with no livestock can join as an associate member.
  • A family running cattle or hay ground near Sagle or Clark Fork may qualify for regular membership.
  • A business owner can ask about business membership along with business coverage.

What Farm Bureau insurance can cover

Farm Bureau insurance is not only farm insurance. Idaho Farm Bureau Insurance lists auto, homeowners, renters, umbrella, farm and ranch, business, life, crop, and recreational coverage on its insurance products page. Some lines are written by affiliated companies: life insurance is offered through Farm Bureau Life Insurance Company of West Des Moines, Iowa, and business policies through Western Community Insurance Company of Pocatello.

For Sandpoint and Ponderay households, the conversations we have most often are about:

Coverage, eligibility, and price depend on the property, the people, and underwriting. The insurer's quote forms note that it insures Idaho residents, so if you are relocating, our moving checklist explains how to line up start dates.

Choosing a Farm Bureau agent in Sandpoint and Ponderay

More than one Farm Bureau agency serves Sandpoint and Ponderay. The insurance company behind each of them is the same. What differs is the people: who answers when you call, how well they know your kind of property, and how they help when you have a claim or a question at renewal. Idaho Farm Bureau Insurance describes its agents as independent contractors supported by an Idaho-based company, so each agency runs its own office and team.

Questions worth asking any Farm Bureau agent you are considering:

  1. Who on your team will handle my policies day to day?
  2. Have you insured properties like mine, such as a lake home, acreage, or a shop?
  3. How do you review coverage at renewal?
  4. What do you do when I have a claim?

One practical note: another Farm Bureau agency shares our building on Kootenai Cutoff Road. We are Suite A, run by the Marks family since 1976. Farm Bureau's agent directories also list us as The John Marks Agency. For a broader look at agency choices, read how to choose an insurance agency in Sandpoint.
